Daniel Post Office Chooses Hay Slide for Centennial Cancellation

The Daniel Post Office will use a drawing of a hay slide by local artist Dele Ball to commemorate Daniel's centennial on February 1, 2000. In years past each ranch had its own "hay slide" with a pole plunger. The plunger pushed the hay up over the hay slide and it fell into large, loose haystacks. In the winter the hay was fed out by pitching it off a horse drawn hay sled. Large tractors and hay balers have replaced this "hay slide" method of hay harvest used by early Daniel pioneers. The hay slide is unique to the history and economy of the Daniel area and thus was chosen for the pictorial cancellation.

Dele has put together cachet envelopes, which feature the centennial cancellation along with a history of Daniel and the area surrounding it. These envelopes are available for purchase at the Daniel Store.

On February 1st, Daniel Postmaster Florence Beard will be using the Daniel centennial pictorial cancellation to stamp envelopes. This is a once-in-a-century opportunity for Sublette County residents to get a piece of history. You can bring your own envelope or Florence says envelopes can be purchased at the post office.
