Two Elk Poached Near Pinedale

Law enforcement authorities from the Wyoming Game and Fish are reporting a recent poaching incident where two bull elk were illegally shot and left to spoil in the Chambers Bay area of Fremont Lake, north of Pinedale. The incident was reported to North Pinedale Game Warden Duke Early on November 17, after an elk hunter had discovered the remains. This area, elk hunt area 96, had closed to the hunting of bull elk on October 31, but was still open for antlerless elk at the time. It was estimated that the two bulls had been shot around November 11-14.

The two elk had been field dressed and quartered with the antlers removed. The meat and antlers were then stashed and hidden under pine boughs in a manner that would suggest the perpetrators had planned to return for them. The two elk were monitored daily for a week by local Game Wardens, but the perpetrators did not return to recover the animals. The meat was scavenged and not salvageable.

The Wyoming Game and Fish would appreciate any information that could be provided regarding this incident. Anyone providing information leading to the conviction of those responsible for wildlife crimes can be eligible for a cash reward through the Stop Poaching reward fund. To report information on the two elk recently poached, or any other wildlife violation, call the STOP POACHING hotline at 1-800-442-4113. <
