Journal Garners Awards at WPA Conference
Advertising Team grabs top honors in the state

After its first ever appearance at the Wyoming Press Association Winter Conference and annual awards ceremony, the Sublette County Journal returned to Pinedale with a major design award and numerous Pacemaker Awards. The Journal competed in the Small Weekly newspaper category against 19 other papers across Wyoming.

The Journal won the first place major award for Advertising. The judges complemented the Journal for producing "good, clever small space ads. Crisp typography. Overall good sense of layout and design."

The Pacemaker Awards are chosen by a panel of judges from the Montana Press Association who are sent submissions from each paper in 21 different categories. The categories range from column writing to photos to individual ad design.

The Journal won three 1st place Pacemaker Awards in the competition. Bondurant's Paul Postma won a 1st place Pacemaker for his artwork which appeared on the cover of the Journal's 2000 Green River Rendezvous issue. Sue Sommers won a 1st Place Pacemaker in open page design for the Journal's 1999 Thanksgiving issue cover page, and a photo of Blaine Matthews taken at last summer's Little Buckaroo Rodeo won a 1st Place Pacemaker in the portrait/personality category.

Journal columnist Cris Paravicini won second place Pacemaker Award for her "Weatherin' It" column. "A unique approach about life and the weather," wrote the judges about Ms. Paravicini's work. "Different and delightful."

The Journal also garnered a 2nd place Pacemaker in the special merit category for its "The Future Is Now" 'series of interviews this time last year by Jennifer Binning and Sue Sommers.

Overall, the Journal won 12 Pacemakers in the competition; four 1st Place awards, six 2nd Place awards, and two honorable mentions. Only one other small newspaper in the state won more awards at the competition.
