County Newspapers To Merge
Sublette County Journal to cease publication

Sublette County Journal founder and publisher Rob Shaul of Pinedale has purchased the Pinedale Roundup from Elizabeth McCabe of Jackson.

"I intend to merge the two newspapers beginning next Thursday (February 22)," said Mr. Shaul. He will cease publishing the Sublette County Journal after this issue, and continue with the Pinedale Roundup.

"The Pinedale Roundup is 95 years old," he said. "It's an institution in Sublette County. It should remain so."

Mr. Shaul heard in January that the Roundup might be for sale. He contacted Elizabeth McCabe directly and purchased the newspaper before it was officially listed for sale.

There was interest in purchasing the Roundup from at least two other Wyoming publishers outside of Sublette County.

The staffs of the two newspapers will be combined. This will result in layoffs from the Roundup staff. Current Roundup employees Rhonda Swain, Em Ellis, Sonia Otteman and Delsa Allen have accepted job offers from the new publisher.

The Roundup will be operated by Mr. Shaul's company, Alpine Publishing, Inc., of which he is the sole stockholder. The First National Bank of Pinedale financed the purchase.

Mr. Shaul began publishing the Journal in September, 1996, in Big Piney. Initially the newspaper was published every other week. In May 1999, he moved the newspaper to Pinedale and in July of that year, began publishing weekly.

Fred and Elizabeth McCabe have owned the Pinedale Roundup for 14 years. They purchased the Roundup from Rick Samulski in 1987. <
